Valparaiso University is expanding its engagement with faith-based initiatives by signing a memorandum of understanding with Quake, a ministry organization. This agreement marks a step in a phased plan for Valparaiso University to acquire and assume management of Quake’s operations. Quake is dedicated to providing retreat experiences that help young people in grades 6-12 across the United States explore their faith.

This partnership offers Valparaiso University an opportunity to deepen its Lutheran roots and expand its public reach. The University aims to serve more closely with faith groups, other organizations, and families, both within the local community and nationwide. Valparaiso University has a history of fostering opportunities for faith formation, leadership development, and personal growth. By integrating Quake, the University intends to support its developing strategic vision for a lifelong faith and learning ecosystem that extends beyond a traditional college experience.

University President Rev. Brian Konkol, Ph.D., stated that Valparaiso University believes "faith and learning are lifelong journeys that shape how we live, lead, and serve." He added that welcoming Quake into the campus community will further deepen the University’s roots and expand its reach by partnering with churches, families, and young people, to help individuals build purposeful lives.

The phased transition of operational leadership is designed to maintain the experiences that Quake offers to youth. Event directors Amanda Clark and Jennifer Miller, who collectively bring 50 years of experience to Quake's mission, will continue in their roles. Their expertise will be complemented by Valparaiso University’s established connection with the Church and its dedication to creating supportive environments for young people's growth in faith and learning.

Quake originated with Youth Encounter, which influenced its mission and ministry for 50 years. Since 2016, Quake has operated as part of Life Promotions. Bob Lenz, founder and president of Life Promotions, expressed that it had been a privilege for his organization to advance Quake's mission of helping youth encounter the Gospel and grow in faith for the past decade. He conveyed excitement for Quake's next chapter at Valparaiso University, anticipating its continued impact on future generations.

With Quake moving to its new home, Life Promotions plans to focus on its Dignity Revolution program, which operates in schools across the country to champion the value of every person. Life Promotions stated it looks forward to continuing to promote and partner with Quake in the future.

Both Quake and Valparaiso University anticipate this transition will enable them to continue making a positive impact on young people's lives. The schedule for Quake’s 2027 events is now available, and registration is set to open on November 1, 2026. Individuals interested in supporting the program and participants can make one-time or recurring donations through the Valparaiso University website. Throughout its history, Quake's work has relied on the support of numerous churches, leaders, volunteers, and donors. Valparaiso University and Quake plan to continue these partnerships with faith communities across the United States.
