Brandon Osika, a Valparaiso University student focusing on sports management within the College of Business, is actively applying his academic learning in professional baseball. Osika, a resident of Crown Point, began his tenure with the Gary RailCats baseball team as an intern during his senior year of high school. This initial opportunity led to him becoming, at 18 years old, the youngest clubhouse professional in the American Association of Professional Baseball. He has maintained this role for three and a half years, concurrently pursuing his degree at Valparaiso University.
Osika’s experience with the RailCats spans various operational areas, including business management, sales, ballpark operations, and overseeing the food and beverage system. He values how his Valpo education strengthens his practical work, noting that the program aligns with current industry standards. According to Osika, the degree provides essential knowledge, helping him understand the rationale behind industry practices and rounding out his existing professional experience.
A key takeaway from Osika’s professional journey is the importance of building relationships. He advises aspiring sports professionals to prioritize internships and networking, emphasizing that connections are crucial for entering and progressing within the competitive sports industry. He states that getting "in the door" is the most challenging step, and internships provide both valuable resume experience and opportunities to forge connections that could prove beneficial later.
This emphasis on relationships extends to Osika’s academic life at Valpo. He has found connections with classmates and professors to be among the most rewarding aspects of his education. Despite being a commuter, Osika has immersed himself in campus life through participation in intramural sports, university events, and time spent with peers in the College of Business’s sports lounge. He notes that active participation in student activities allows commuters to fully experience campus life.
Osika grew up as both a passionate baseball fan and player, and his professional path reflects his desire to keep the sport central to his career. He intends to continue working with the RailCats for the foreseeable future, further developing the skills, knowledge, and professional network cultivated through both his employment and his Valparaiso University studies. He acknowledges the significance of having several years of professional baseball experience at his age. Osika also commends his Valpo professors for their expertise and willingness to assist students, stating they are "always willing to help if you have a question" and go "above and beyond."
