Eight Valparaiso University students participated in the 2026 CAPS (Calling and Purpose in Society) Fellows program this summer, gaining experience through purpose-driven internships with nonprofit organizations. Now in its 13th year, the program connects students with meaningful work opportunities in Northwest Indiana, Chicago, and beyond, supporting them in exploring their future career paths.
The CAPS Fellows program is led by Valparaiso University's Institute for Leadership and Service. It aims to provide students with opportunities for service and reflection as they consider their calling after college. Kat Peters, associate director with the Institute for Leadership and Service, stated that the program allows students to experience what a life addressing a particular social challenge might involve. She also noted that fellows observe how nonprofit organizations operate to achieve positive outcomes, developing their skills and passions while working as part of a team.
Beyond their summer internships, CAPS Fellows engage in both individual and group reflections. They also document their experiences on the CAPS Fellows Blog. This structure is designed to foster both personal growth and professional development among participants.
Tyrell Frieson ’28, a Social Work major and Christ College Scholar, completed his CAPS Fellow internship with the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago. He noted that reflection is a core component of the CAPS assignments, prompting students to think intentionally about their learning, growth, and how their internship connects to their future goals. Frieson indicated this reflection process significantly supported his belief in his ability to pursue higher education.
Grace Vaughn ’28, a Health Science major, interned with Camp Lakeside, an all-abilities summer camp for children. She reported that the experience helped her develop patience, strengthen communication skills, and adapt to others' needs. Vaughn recommended the CAPS program to fellow students as an opportunity to challenge their perceptions of themselves and their impact on others, highlighting the importance of consciously reflecting on one's attitude and actions.
Other students participating in the 2026 CAPS Fellows program and their respective internship organizations include:
* Angel Johnson ’27, a Political Science major, interned with By The Hand Club for Kids. * Sofia Gomez ’28, a Psychology major, interned with Compass International Family Center. * Matthew Landrum ’27, majoring in Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics, interned with Compass International Family Center. * Aria Davis ’28, a Business Analytics major, interned with Shirley Heinze Land Trust. * Isabelle Byrt ’28, a Biology major and Christ College Scholar, interned with Save The Dunes. * Armelle S. Ndemanou Dongmo ’27, a Nursing major, interned with Jacob’s Ladder Pediatric Rehabilitation. * Nickie Smar ’28, majoring in Environmental Science and Geography and a Christ College Scholar, interned with The Grünewald Guild.
These fellows dedicated their summer to service, providing thoughtful reflections on their experiences. The Institute for Leadership and Service also offers other opportunities for engagement, including speaker series, service projects, and trips.
