The City of Valparaiso is inviting local neighborhoods to submit applications for the 2027 Neighborhood Improvement Grant program. This initiative aims to assist residents in bringing their ideas to life through projects designed to enhance their specific neighborhoods and strengthen overall community connections. Applications for the upcoming 2027 grant cycle are due by April 1, 2027.
Since its establishment in 2018, the Neighborhood Improvement Grant program has significantly contributed to local development across Valparaiso. The City has provided funding for 159 projects in more than 47 neighborhoods during this period. These community-led efforts have collectively resulted in over $2.2 million in neighborhood improvements, reflecting a sustained commitment to fostering local betterment and resident-driven initiatives.
Maggie Clifton, Valparaiso’s Community Engagement Director, highlighted the program’s role in uniting residents. Clifton stated that "These projects reflect the creativity and initiative of our residents." She further noted that the grants offer a valuable opportunity for neighbors to collaborate around a shared vision for their specific area, contributing to neighborhood pride and connections that make Valparaiso a distinct place to reside.
The Neighborhood Improvement Grant program receives its funding from the Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission. The City’s Community Engagement Department is responsible for administering the program, ensuring its effective operation and outreach. A grant review committee plays a crucial role in the selection process, providing assistance to identify projects that best meet the program’s goals and benefit the wider community.
For the 2027 grant cycle, successful applications can receive awards of up to $20,000 per neighborhood project. Detailed guidelines, all necessary application materials, and additional information pertinent to the program are readily available on the City’s official website. Prospective applicants are encouraged to access these resources to ensure their submissions are complete and accurate before the April 1, 2027, deadline.
Neighborhood groups or individual residents who require assistance or have specific questions regarding the application process or program requirements are encouraged to contact the appropriate city department. Community Engagement Director Maggie Clifton can be reached by calling City Hall at (219) 462-1161.
