A water main break on Galway Drive in the Shamrock subdivision led to a school bus becoming stuck in compromised pavement this morning, according to information issued by Mayor Jon Costas. The incident, which occurred shortly after 7:00 am, resulted in no reported injuries among the students on board, www.ci.valparaiso.in.us reported.
Valparaiso City Services received the initial report of the water main break at 6:57 am. Water main breaks can lead to significant disruptions in water service and undermine the stability of surrounding infrastructure. When pressurized water escapes, it can saturate the underlying soil, which in turn compromises the structural integrity of overlying pavement, potentially creating hazards such as soft spots or sinkholes. It was into such compromised pavement that a Valparaiso Community Schools bus encountered the affected area shortly after 7:00 am, with its rear wheels settling into the damaged road surface and immobilizing the vehicle.
Following the incident, Valparaiso Community Schools personnel ensured the safety of all students. The children aboard the affected bus were safely transferred to a second bus, which then continued its route to school without further delay. Valparaiso Community Schools also promptly notified the parents of the children who were on the affected bus, providing timely updates on the situation and the measures taken to ensure student well-being.
Valparaiso City Services crews are currently on site in the Shamrock neighborhood. Their work involves both repairing the identified water main break and conducting a thorough assessment of the roadway. This assessment is crucial for determining the full extent of the damage to the pavement and ensuring its structural integrity before the road can be deemed safe for regular traffic. Such repairs are often a multi-stage process, requiring careful attention to both the immediate infrastructure failure and the surrounding ground conditions.
As a direct consequence of the water main break and the subsequent repair work, precautionary boil advisories will be communicated to 15 residences in the vicinity. These advisories are a standard public health measure implemented when water pressure drops significantly or repairs expose water lines, as they help ensure the safety of the drinking water supply for affected customers. Mayor Costas expressed gratitude to both Valparaiso Community Schools for their swift action and the residents of the Shamrock neighborhood for their assistance and patience during the disruption. The ongoing efforts by City Services aim to resolve the issue promptly and safely for all affected residents and commuters, minimizing further inconvenience.
